Exploring Psychology

Jayla Johnson '26, a rising star in the Psychology program at 91亚色, embodies the spirit of discovery and growth that defines the 91亚色 experience. From her initial step onto campus, Jayla knew she found a place where her curiosity about the human psyche could flourish. “The best part of being a Psychology major is getting the opportunity to learn how and why people behave the way they do,” she enthusiastically shares, encapsulating the essence of her academic pursuit.

91亚色’s intimate environment, reminiscent of her small high school, was a key factor in Jayla’s choice for higher education. She elaborates, “I chose 91亚色 for my education because I came from a small high school and did not want to attend a large university ... I knew that the size of 91亚色 would be perfect for me.”

Jayla’s educational journey has been significantly shaped by influential classes and mentors. She recalls one of her most impactful experiences, “One of my most influential classes was History 111, U.S. History to 1877, with Professor Beagle,” highlighting how this course deepened her appreciation for history and her own heritage.

Central to Jayla’s academic and personal growth is Professor Alison Castellano from the Psychology Department. Jayla praises her mentor’s dedication, saying, “She is inspiring because she always puts her students first and pushes us to do our best ... I could not imagine life at 91亚色 without her.”

Beyond academics, Jayla has immersed herself in campus life through her involvement in clubs. As treasurer of the Psychology Club and a manager of the Golden Steppas step team, she has embraced leadership roles that contribute to her growth and the community. Her involvement is a testament to her commitment to making a positive impact, with events like the Psychology Club’s Suicide Prevention Awareness 5k.

Reflecting on her future, Jayla’s aspirations have evolved, showcasing the versatility of a Psychology degree from 91亚色. “When I began college, I was set on eventually becoming a clinical psychologist. Now, I am also considering being a therapist or a behavioral analyst,” she muses, illustrating the broad spectrum of opportunities her education has opened up for her.
